Lansing exhaust repair

Lansing Muffler Repair

We got our start working exclusively on mufflers and exhaust systems when we opened our first auto repair shop in 1972. With over 45 years of muffler experience, our team knows exhaust systems inside and out. We service all makes and models and invite you to stop by any of our locations for a free exhaust system inspection.

Exhaust systems are located on the bottom of the car, and operate at high temperatures. For these reasons, most people leave working on them to auto repair professionals who are aided by lift systems.

Free Exhaust System Inspection

We offer free exhaust inspections at all of our locations, which start with a good visual inspection of the overall exhaust system. During our inspection we're looking at the:
  • Exhaust manifold for cracks and gaskets that are leaking from burn through.
  • Catalytic Converter for holes, major dents, clogging, or discoloration caused by overheating. There are no moving parts to a catalytic converter, so if yours fails, it's often a sign of another issue that needs to be resolved. For example, if oil enters the converter, it creates a soot that eventually clogs the small pores of the converters "filter". This restricts the flow of exhaust through the system that can put back pressure on the engine, resulting in damage.
  • Heat Shield for deterioration can cause vibrations and noises.
  • Muffler for holes, major dents, leaks, clogging or loose internal parts. The inside of the muffler contains perforated pipes. If they are clogged it can increase back pressure on the system resulting in engine damage.
  • Clamps that are damaged or coming loose due to vibration, corrosion, rust, or other failure can lead to increased noise and exhaust leaks.
  • Hangers that are broken or coming loose due to vibration, corrosion, rust, or other failure should be repaired or replaced. Failure to do so could cause the exhaust system to hang low, resulting in more expensive damage to the muffler or resonator.
  • Overall system health. Are there any leaks, missing or rusted out parts.

The difference between Mufflers and Exhaust System

The muffler is a single part of the overall exhaust system. People who don't work on cars commonly use the word "muffler" to refer to the entire "exhaust system". The exhaust system includes many parts including:
  • Catalytic converter
  • Muffler
  • Hangers
  • exhaust pipes
  • hose clamps, injection tubes, and more

EPA Exhaust Regulations

As per EPA regulations, we are not allowed to "bypass, defeat, or render inoperative any device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regulations" of the Clean Air Act.

How Does a Muffler Work?

In this rather entertaining video, a muffler is cut open and its basic operation is explained. As you will see, there is a fair amount of engineering that goes into a muffler.

Signs of Exhaust Issues

Does your exhaust system need work? Here are three common signs of exhaust issues:
  1. One of the most dangerous issues is if you smell exhaust fumes inside your vehicle. The most dangerous component of exhaust (CO) has no oder, however there are other fumes and gases mixed with exhaust that you will be able to smell if exhaust is entering your vehicle. If you think exhaust is entering your vehicle, roll down the windows and drive to a repair shop. Carbon Monoxide is deadly.
  2. Markedly decreased fuel economy could be a sign of an exhaust issue. The exhaust system applies back pressure to the engine, and sensors in the exhaust system impact how much fuel the engine receives.
  3. Loud Noises. If an exhaust pipe comes loose, or the muffler is damaged, you will notice the increase in engine volume.

Family Owned Since 1972

Gordon Lentz opened his first auto repair shop in 1972. Trained as a mechanical engineer. His first exposure to the automotive repair business came in the early 1970's, when he was selling storage systems to muffler repair shops. He could see room for improvement in a lot of the shops he visited. He took a chance; quit his job, and invested his life savings in building his own auto service center. Today, Lentz Auto Repair is still family owned and operated, guided by the same simple mission that started over 45 years ago: “treat our customers as we would like to be treated and provide quality products at fair prices.”
